Japanese Garden and Landscapes 1650-1950

The Japanese garden and its landscape pose an interesting case: easy to study because the territory is confined and fruitful to study because it is rich in brainwork. Until rather recently at least, work advanced uninterrupted by war or foreign occupation and more than once thinking was intensified by the frequent natural disasters that hit Japan. The naturalism that one may find in Japanese gardens shows how to tie place-making to sound ecology
– in other words, how to tie constructs of the mind to the technical constructs of soil, water, and plants. The sustainable management of such a naturalistic environment can be enjoyed as something with aesthetic value, but it also contributes to the sustainability of civilization as a whole.
